About us, in some more detail
We knew we wanted to adopt even before we had Dominic. He came to us via IVF, but after that, we decided to concentrate on adoption.
"But will my child be as loved as a biological one, when you already have one?" is a natural question you might have now.
The answer is yes, and we explain why we know this, without a doubt, on this page.
Below, we present ourselves and our pets in more detail. Read more on the next page: Parenting style.

DavidI'm from the Netherlands and was raised in a family of three boys of which I was the middle one. I have a large extended family and growing up I had a lot of fun with them. My mom’s youngest sister moved to Canada with her husband in the 80’s to run a farm, and through them I was introduced to this country. I fell in love with Canada and I feel fortunate to now call it my home. My aunt and uncle have six grown-up children and a growing number of grand- children. They live near Montreal, so we visit often. We love their organic farm and the life they live there.
I work as a pilot. My grandfather gave me the bug when taking me out flying remotely controlled airplanes as a kid. I did my flight training in Manitoba in 2004, and after working as a flight instructor and flying for regional airlines I landed my current job. I love my profession and everything that comes with it! The job helps our family to do something we greatly enjoy: travelling! Pre-pandemic we were able to visit our families in Europe often. Dominic loves seeing his grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins. Likewise, we would love to show your child the world as we discover it. During my time off (lots during the pandemic) I love being outside with Dominic. Teaching him soccer and badminton or tobogganing in winter. I enjoy yoga and workouts that get my cardio going. Apart from that I love spending time on the water in our canoe or sailboat and enjoy playing my saxophone in a band or guitar at home. |
TheresaI’m originally from Sweden, and have lived in Canada since 2004. I came here for graduate studies, and ended up staying since I met a very cute pilot… I have three younger brothers and my family are all computer geeks, who come to visit often (pre-pandemic...)
During my childhood, we would go camping almost every summer. This taught me to love other countries and cultures. I love camping, how it brings family closer together and makes you enjoy life more fully, in the moment. My work is within the field of science research and I worked at a university before Dominic was born. I continued working from home after he was born and did some teaching as well. Last year I started working as a writer/editor for a science outreach magazine and love it. I share David’s love of music; I play the flute and piano and like singing and dancing. After we bought our house, we discovered that we really like gardening! Also, I have always enjoyed cooking and making healthy, yummy food, especially bread. I enjoy photography a lot and like to document every-day life as well as special events. I would like to share my photos of your child with you as you prefer. My most rewarding interest so far is taking care of Dominic, and seeing life through his eyes. To share our lives with another child would be a dream come true for all of us. |
DominicDominic was born in March 2015. It is quite clear that he was never supposed to be an only child; he keeps asking us for a brother or a sister (or both!). Right now, his plan is to marry his classmate so he can bring her home to live with us.
Dominic loves to play with other children, our cats, dinosaurs, sharks, dragons, Pokemon and Lego. He is empathetic, caring and gentle around younger kids, and is more than ready to welcome another sibling in the family. He has three cousins in the Netherlands, one in Sweden, and seven 2nd cousins (close as cousins) in Quebec (close to St Jean sûr Richelieu), and they love getting together. Other interests include: Camping (returning the rented camper last summer was not a popular action...), cycling, badminton, soccer, playing tag, puzzling, drawing, playing on mom's iPad (we aim to keep total screen time to max 1 hr per day as per experts' recommendations) and watching Netflix. He is continuing swimming school again now, after having had a break during the pandemic. He enjoys his piano lessons. Dominic has been attending a French school and went there for 2 years of Kindergarten. He absolutely loves it and was upset when the school was closed (this is also where he went to 2-day daycare from age 3.5, so all was familiar to him). The language has come very naturally. His parents are a little bit jealous..! :D |
Pinda & WokkelsThese boys have been with us since 2012. In fact, Theresa is a bit crazy about birds and dreams of one day having a big parrot (may adopt one when retired). Pinda is the alpha and very playful (and not at all scared of the kitties). He can say a few sentences "Pinda-biiiird", kissing sounds etc. Wokkels is a bit more cautious, but very loving. (Pinda is Dutch for peanut and Wokkels is a Dutch kind of chips.)

Neo & ApolloDavid got Neo (left) for our 10-year anniversary, because he is a cat person and had gone without for quite some time... Theresa spent a lot of time on cat-bird-training, and it seems to have worked out quite well. Then we got Apollo (right) a few years later, who is a big teddy bear of a cat. They get along extremely well for being cats!

The fish tank crewThese guys take it easy, and seem to be happy - haven't had a fish death for a few years. The remaining Danios are 50% older than their normal life span. So I guess we're doing something right... The undisputed alpha of the tank is obviously the angel fish, and he is fair but firm (i.e. he gets to eat first).
